Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
