British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
