Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
