At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
